DEMAND FOR KITCHEN AND BATH PREFERENCES REMAINS STRONG

The American Institute of Architects' (AIA) latest quarterly "Home Design Trends Survey" recently revealed that demand for new products and features in kitchens and bathrooms remains strong as the residential construction market continues to gain momentum.

Kitchen and bath remodeling remains a top performer among construction segments and "demand has remained solid for smart-home features in the kitchen," explained Kermit Baker, chief economist for AIA.

NESAW FOCUSES ON WOODWORKING CAREERS

The New England School of Architectural Woodworking (NESAW), run by Greg Larson, isn't your average school woodshop. For one, the average student is around 32 years old, as many are career changers with a few younger students just starting out.

The school covers production skills, quality work and also how to deal with paying customers. Each term culminates with a group project that is typically a full kitchen for a homeowner in the area.

"We're unique among woodworking schools in that, after learning cabinet-making fundamentals, our students work directly with members of the local community to design, draw, plan, build, finish and install projects, which these days are usually kitchens." said Larson.

HARDWOOD MANUFACTURERS EXPECT CONTINUED GROWTH & INCREASED LUMBER COSTS

A recent report from Forecon, Inc. revealed that hardwood manufactures are looking at positive growth, but need to expect rising prices for hardwood lumber and panel products.

According to the report, "lumber prices for our major (by value) species have all shown heavy demand, and more have seen a consistent upward trend in price throughout 2017 and certainly coming into 2018."

Forecon, Inc. is one of the oldest established professional forestry consulting firms operating in the hardwood regions of the Eastern United States. Click here to read more from the study.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT - ACPI ACQUIRES MASTER WOODCRAFT CABINETRY

It was announced recently that acpi acquired Master WoodCraft Cabinetry as a wholly owned subsidiary, making it the fourth largest kitchen cabinet manufacturer in the United States. Master WoodCraft will continue to manufacture under its brand name at its current facilities.

"Master WoodCraft Cabinetry's strength in the multi-family market, particularly in the southern United States, made it a good fit for acpi, which has a strong multi-family market presence in other U.S. regions. Geographically there's very little overlap." said acpi CEO, Larry Denbrock.

“These are cabinet people and they own three other cabinet companies so they know the cabinet business,” said Mark Trexler, president, Master Woodcraft. “acpi is a very solid, stable company and we know they will take care of the people and allow the company to grow.”
